Maria Recommends ...

Hello everyone,

I was in the grocery store and heard a couple talking about the woman's fructose malabsorption troubles ... I couldn't believe it.  The word about this debilitating disorder is definitely out.  Help spread the word ... talk about Fructose Malabsorption.  People who know that they have, can begin to treat it.  I suffered for such a long time because I did not know what the problem was.  As soon as I  figured it out, I got better ... so ... talk about FM.

I am so excited to share another list of products recommendations.  As always, I have used each and every one of these products myself, many are must-haves. This list is in no particular order and I am in no way affiliated with any of these companies or products. Please remember that everyone is different and just because something works for me does not mean that it will work for you necessarily.

The following products have helped me tremendously with digestion and overall health and well-being. I hope they do the same for you.  I love you all and want everyone to live a high quality of life like I do.  Please feel free to leave your comments and thoughts.  I enjoy them and so does everyone else.

Heathers' Tummy Fiber, Acacia Senegal
If you are looking for a FM safe fiber, Heather has you covered.

Garden of Life Raw Probiotics Colon Care
This probiotic arrives to your door on ice.  This is one of my favorite probiotics.

Dr. Doherty's C-Liac Vitality Iron
All of Dr. Doherty's products are FM safe.  If you need Iron this is the best you can get.

Garden of Life Probiotic Smile
I love these mints.  I cannot recommend them enough.  They whiten the teeth while freshening the breath.

Garden of Life Primal Defense Ultra
God made dirt and dirt don't hurt.  This is one of the best probiotics that I have used.

Heather's Peppermint Oil Capsules
These capsules are awesome.  They are inexpensive and work wonderfully.  They settle my stomach and create a tingle I can feel.  Love them, so does my husband.

Heather's Tummy Teas
Heather has a great selection of teas.  Check them out.

Garden of life Wobenzym® N
This one is for healthy joint support, not FM.  I found it easy to take, as it did not irritate my symptoms and I really found it helpful for joint health.

Garden of Life Protein Powder
This is a great protein powder.  Tastes great, the best ingredients & did not irritate symptoms.

I also recommend a couple books by Heather VanVorous - Eating for IBS & The First Year.

I Love You All.  Wishing you health, happiness and abundance!

Enzymedica CarbGest Review

Enzymedica is one of the best places to go for enzymes.  This is a great product for those who love carbohydrates.  These enzymes work really well, especially when you want that extra serving of potatoes or extra slice of bread.  My husband, who does not have FM, likes these just as much as I do.

Enzymedica pH-Basic™ Review

These enzymes are awesome.  They balance you pH, making them work even better than normal enzymes.  The bottle comes with pH testing litmus paper, so you will know for sure that your acid/alchaline balance is balanced.  These are both my husband and my favorite enzyme product of all time.

Highly recommended!!!

Enzymedica Gastro™ Review

If you struggle with a lot of gas, give these enzymes    a try.  I found them to be extremely helpful when I overate or consumed beans.

Nordic Naturals® Complete™ Omega-3•6•9 Review

These are the best Omega's that I have ever taken.  First of all they do not have a fishy taste and odor and most importantly they do not cause digestion troubles.  I was so surprised by the lack of digestive upset I had when taking these, which is such good news because they are so good for you.

Jarrow Formulas Jarro-Zymes Plus Review

I love ordering from Jarrow.  They have great customer service and lots and lots of products.  These enzymes are quite popular and once you give them a spin, you will quickly realize that they work great.

Dr. Doherty's C-Liac Vitality L-Theanine

Both my husband and myself absolutely LOVE this stuff ... It works great for anxiety, a common problem in those with FM.  If you are under more stress than normal you can increase your dosage a bit ... See description and directions below.

From the Dr. Doherty website

"Anxiety is a very common challenge for those with gluten sensitivity; L-Theanine, an extract of green tea, has been one of Dr. Doherty clinical favorites for the last decade. L-Theanine is an amino acid that enhances GABA, one of our calming brain chemicals. Unlike anti-anxiety medication, it is non-addictive, doesn't cause drowsiness, and increases focus.  It can be taken as needed for anxiety, takes effect in 20 minutes and lasts 4-6 hours. According to studies, taken daily, it has a powerful neuroprotective effect, improving memory and decreasing your risks of dementia. L-Theanine can also be helpful for insomnia related to stress and anxiety. As with all our supplements we batch test C-liac Vitality L-Theanine for gluten for your safety. Our supplement contains patented Suntheanine and is manufactured in the United States. We hope it works as well for you as it has for hundreds of our patients.
Dosage: Take 1 capsule two to three times daily. Under times of increased stress you can increase the dosage to 2 capsules 3 times daily, or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner. 60 Vegetarian Capsules/bottle."

Price: $19.95 (60 capsules)

Dr Doherty's C-liac Vitality Sam-E

Honestly I Love Dr Doherty and her products.  They are perfect for FMers ... Depression and anxiety are common symptoms of FM.  This supplement is safe to take and works like a charm ... Highly recommend!

From the Dr. Doherty website

"Sam-e  is a naturally occurring molecule in our bodies. It is used for three major reasons as a supplement. 1) it is one of natures most powerful antidepressants and mood stabilizers, 2) It reduces joint pain, 3) it is very good for the liver as it is a precursor to glutathione, one of the strongest antioxidants in our bodies. This is one of Dr. Doherty’s favorite supplements when working with gluten-free patients who often have one or more of the issues listed above. Sam-e can be depleted by malabsorption, chronic stress and pain. Sam-e is well tolerated by sensitve people. If you are taking antidepressants it can have an additive effect with these medications, so please consult with you practitioner before adding Sam-e. It usually takes up to three weeks to take effect, dosage varies from 200mg to 1200mg daily. Each tablet contains 200mg. Take in the morning preferably on an empty stomach. "

Price: $35.00 (30 capsules)

Nordic Naturals Omega Probiotic

Nordic Naturals Rocks this probiotic omega like there is no tomorrow.  Everyone is different though and fish oil is known to cause digestive upsets in everyone.  I take half the normal dose and it works great.  Be aware because it may contain traces of casein.  It has a high concentration of EPA and DHA with 2 billion viable cells of Bacillus coagulans.

From the Nordic Natural's website

"Purified Fish Oil + Live Probiotic Spores
Provides over 2 billion stable and viable probiotic spores  per serving
Promotes a healthy balance of intestinal flora*
Enhances overall digestive and gastrointestinal health and function*
May help support those with digestive and immune challenges*

Omega Probiotic combines two of the most important and lacking nutrients in the modern diet in a breakthrough formula for digestive and gastrointestinal health. Concentrated fish oil works in synergy with a unique spore-form probiotic to deliver all the health benefits of omega-3s (EPA+DHA), while also supporting the immune system and promoting an optimal balance of healthy vs. harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. Unlike most probiotics on the market, this species of probiotic is in spore form, which delivers more live cultures than common probiotic yogurt cultures, and delivers those cultures more effectively.  Two soft gels daily, with food, or as directed by your health care professional or pharmacist."

Price: Around 30.00 (60 soft gels)

Enzymedica Digest Gold + probiotics

I have the entire extended family hooked on these bad boys ...

From the Enzymedica website

"Digest Gold + Probiotics combines Enzymedica's award winning digestive enzyme formula with 500 million cultures of specially coated (TherActive™) probiotics.  This delivery system is not an encapsulation process--it is a coating that allows for maximum performance and preservation of probiotics.  Superior to standard time release mechanisms, TherActive™ delivery ensures release in the alkaline pH of the lower intestine, guaranteeing potency, delivering healthy bacteria into the intestinal tract for optimal benefit.
Combining enzymes and probiotics is ideal.  Digest Gold + Probiotics provides complete digestive care in the convenience of a single capsule dose."

Price: Around 30.00 (45 capsules)  Larger sizes available.

Enzymedica Gluten Ease with DPP-IV Activity

This is the best gluten enzyme I have found so far.  My husband takes it all the time.  It is for casein and gluten intolerance and really works well.

From the Enzymedica website

"GlutenEase™; supports people suffering with gluten or casein intolerance. GlutenEase is not formulated to prevent celiac symptoms. GlutenEase contains a modified Protease Thera-blend with an enzyme activity called DPP-IV. Proteases high in DPP-IV activity assist in normalizing inflammatory response to the gluten peptide, thus better digesting and utilizing gluten containing foods. This proactively supports the gut, allowing proteins to be properly broken down and absorbed in their digested state; broadening the potential food groups a person may eat. GlutenEase may also be used by those who wish to remain on the GFCF diet to ensure complete breakdown of proteins safe and effectively."

Price: Around 30.00 (60 capsules)  Larger sizes available.

Histame

Okay, now this one is a bit off the Fructose Malabsorption help list, but it just might help with a condition that you did not know that you have ... histamine intolerance.  My husband is completely dependent on this stuff come game day which normally leads to food and beer intolerance symptoms.  When he takes this first, before drinking beer he has less symptoms.  Try it out and let me know if it works for you.  Go to the Histame website to learn more about histamine intolerance.  If you are still struggling with FM symptoms even after following all the guidelines this will probably help.

From the Histame website

"Histame degrades the histamine levels that can cause food intolerance by replenishing the body's enzyme Diamine Oxidase (DAO)."

Price: $41.50 (30 capsules)

RezVera

RezVera is a supplement for anyone experiencing IBS symptoms.  It is basically an enzyme and if you have not had success with any enzymes in the past try this one.  Although it helped my symptoms somewhat, my husband found it extremely beneficial.  Remember everyone is different.  Our bodies are temples and chemistry labs ... not two alike.  The main ingredients in RezVera are the digestive enzymes, aloe vera and resveratrol. Both are natural ingredients known to aide digestion and promote good general health.  It is worth trying out if you are still suffering from digestive symptoms.

From the RezVera website

"Gas, constipation, diarrhea and stomach bloating could be more than a typical upset stomach. They are symptoms of IBS, the most common gastrointestinal (GI) complaint in the United States, affecting up to 40 million people. IBS can affect men and women of all ages, but for unknown reasons it is diagnosed more often in women. People with poor digestive systems are often diagnosed with IBS (Irritable bowel Syndrome) . IBS sufferers usually have one or more of the following symptoms: bloated stomach, intestinal gas, constipation, diarrhea and heartburn. Physical pain and other symptoms of a dysfunctional digestive system causes anxiety and depression due to its unpredictable nature — but there's hope!
You can heal your IBS by starting with a healthy digestive system, and RezVera can be your solution.
RezVera is specially formulated to help people control their IBS problem. Our natural ingredients are designed to help you break down the excessive proteins that are often present in the dysfunctional digestive system.  Be aware of colon cleanse products! Colon cleanses give temporary relief, if at all. Be careful of cleanses because an IBS diagnosis means you have a hyperactive gut. Any kind of "cleanse" is likely to cause severe cramps, pain and could worsen IBS symptoms."

Price: Around $60.00 (90 capsules) One month free, visit website for details.

Barlean's Organic Greens

This is the hands down the best product I have found in quite some time.  Although it has a few ingredients that us FMers can be sensitive to, such as apple and stevia, it works amazing.  I only take 1/2 dose, every morning and it keeps my system well balanced and nourished.  It contains probiotics, enzymes and an array of healthy, organic ingredients that are nutritious and delicious.  Drinking this makes me feel comforted and nurchered.  I take this elixir of life everyday without fail.  I have learned that too much does not register well, meaning my sensitive FM body cannot handle it.  I learned this after I had one scoop in the morning and one in the evening, one story summer day.  I do love this stuff though and so does my adoring hubby!

I am so excited to be able to give away a 30 day supply of this delicious green powder formula as a Halloween treat for one lucky reader.

From the Barlean's website

"New and improved at 95% organic, gluten free and non-GMO, Barlean's Greens are a great-tasting, premium superfood, masterfully formulated with Nature's most vitalizing plant-based ingredients. Every whole food ingredient is responsibly grown and third-party tested to guarantee the absolute highest quality and purity."

Price:  Greens 8.46 oz. lg. $41.75 (Capsules and larger size available.)

Closing,
I Love each and everyone of my readers and wish you all a Happy and safe Halloween this year.  Remember that smarties and sweettarts are usually safe for us FMers, but check ingredients to be sure.  They pull the old fast one sometimes and change the ingredients of the candy.  You want the main ingredient to be dextrose, not HFCS or corn syrup.  Be sure to enter the Barlean's contest below and good luck!

Fructosin Review

Hello everyone,

I have finally conducted what I believe to be an honest Fructosin review. I tried reviewing this before, but did not take it correctly, making it impossible to give an accurate description of my experience. This time around though, I was sure to follow instructions to a tee and following are my results, but first read on about Fructosin, straight from their website and the booklet that comes with these enzymes.

From the SCIOTEC website and Fructosin booklet

"What is fructose?

Fructose is a monosaccharide naturally present in fruits
and vegetables as well as commercial sugar. Usually the
consumption of fructose is unproblematic. It is transported
from the small intestine through the intestinal mucosa to the
circulation system via transport protein GLUT 5. Reaching the
liver, fructose can be used for the body’s energy generation.

Food containing fructose

An increasing amount of fructose can not only be found in
fruits and vegetables, but also in industrial produced food.
Especially food containing more fructose than glucose should
be avoided. Furthermore a lot of diabetic products contain
sorbitol, which inhibits fructose absorption.

Attached please find a list of food containing fructose (e.g.):
• Fruits (grapes, apples, pears,..)
• Vegetables (sweet pepper, cabbage, beetroot, ...)
• Dried fruit (raisins, dates, figs, …)
• Honey, jam, compote and dairy products containing
fruits
• Fruit juice, fruit tea, fruit syrup and soft drinks
• Vinegar, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, ready to
use gravy
• Sweets and pastries (e.g. chocolate, cake, pie, ice
cream)
• Low fat and diabetic products

What does fructose malabsorption mean?

Fructose malabsorption means that ingested fructose cannot
be absorbed properly in the small intestine, according to
a dysfunction of the transport protein GLUT 5. The surplus
of fructose is transported to the large intestine where
fermentation by bacteria can lead to discomfort in the gastrointestinal
tract as well as a reduction of life quality.
Fructose malabsorption can occur temporarily or
permanently. Nevertheless the differentiation to allergies or
the irritable bowel syndrome is very important.

FRUCTOSiN®

The newly developed FRUCTOSiN® is a medical device.

FRUCTOSiN is a worldwide unique food supplement containing the enzyme Xylose Isomerase . This enzyme is able to support the body with the digestion of the surplus of ingested fructose. The consumption of fructose containing food is facilitated naturally.

What are the properties of FRUCTOSiN?

The enzyme Xylose Isomerase constitutes the active component of FRUCTOSiN. Its function is to convert excess dietary fructose in the small intestine into glucose. FRUCTOSiN is not intended as a substitute for a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

What are the effects of Xylose Isomerase?

The natural function of the Xylose Isomerase in the medical product FRUCTOSiN is the conversion of excess fructose to glucose. The patented* process of production ensures the fast delivery of the active enzyme to the small intestine. The reaction catalysed by the enzyme Xylose Isomerase yields glucose, which is easily absorbed into the bloodstream and utilized as a primary nutrient. Due to this rapid absorption of glucose the reverse reaction from glucose to fructose is unlikely.

Characteristics of FRUCTOSiN
FRUCTOSiN is a worldwide unique food supplement
containing the enzyme Xylose Isomerase . This enzyme is
able to support the body with the digestion of the surplus of
ingested fructose. The consumption of fructose containing
food is facilitated naturally.
Important information:
• Histamine-free, lactose-free, gluten-free
• Not to be used by diabetics and people
suffering from hereditary (inherited) fructose
intolerance.

Recommended intake:
Take daily 2 capsules with liquid directly before meals."

My Experience

Here are my results ...

I must admit, testing out the Fructosin capsules made me a little nervous, not because I doubted their effectiveness, but rather because I did not want to have to ingest high fructose foods to conduct the testing ... I have gotten rather used to a simple meal structure. Anyhow, for the sake of science ... (he,he,he) I gave it a whirl. I wanted to test it out on something that I was certain would have consequence normally ... and so ... I ate some cabbage and vinegar after I swallowed down two capsules. I can usually handle a little cabbage once in awhile, while vinegar I stay completely away from. I ate a nice big plate of this and it was delicious and then ... nothing, no symptoms but experience tells me that it is the next day that gives a more detailed story. Normally when I eat cabbage and vinegar I get extremely sick the next day. I cannot stop going to the bathroom until my system is completely flushed. It is very uncomfortable and I can always tell that my body has flushed important nutrition. So the next day comes around and you know what? While I didn't have a difficult time at all having a bowel movement, I was not sick. Hurray! It worked!

I decided to try Fructosin out again, this time with some forbidden fruit - an apple. The apple's in the grocery have been full of temptation and I certainly was more than excited, still nervous, about indulging in a big succulent red. Once again I swallowed down two Fructosin, turned on NPR and took the first bite of a taste I have not had in quite some time. The sharp and crisp sound of the first bite echoed in my ears as my tongue burst and flavor poured through my every pore ... Yes this apple was that good. I did have a small stomachache after I ate it, although no flatulence. The next day, my stool was a little runny, but nothing compared to how it would have been if I ate that apple alone. Success, once again!

I am very pleased with Fructosin and will continue to purchase it. This is an enzyme that you can take everyday which is a great option, even if you adhere to a strict diet.

Cost: (note price in Euros)

10 Caps 9,90€
30 Caps 27,90€
60 Caps 49,90€

Frusano Review: The Gold At The End Of The Rainbow

Hi everyone,

I have found the gold at the end of the rainbow with this week's review ...

Did you know that there is actually a company that makes food low in fructose or fructose-free, specifically for those with Fructose Malabsorption?

I was so excited when I found Frusano and I tested out lots and lots of their products. I was literally in heaven. Frusano makes food products specially designed for those who have a sensitivity to fructose. All of their products are not only extremely low of fructose or fructose-free, but low in sucrose and sorbitol as well. Many are also lactose-free. There product labels are very detailed, giving measurements that are important to us FMers, such as amount of fructose, sorbitol, etc. Most people do not even know what Fructose Malabsorption is, let alone an entire company devoted to bringing the culinary pleasures of life to those who have the dietary restrictions of FM. This is the only company that specializes low fructose and fructose free foods.

They are located in Germany and the only downside is shipping cost if you are out of the area, although they are planning on finding distribution in America soon. Currently there are no Frusano dealers in the States or in Canada. If you live in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg you are in luck. Regardless, Frusano is golden. They have lots of products too. They even have vitamins for both adults and children. This is so important because I have been looking for a vitamin for so long and here is a vitamin, specifically made for those with fructose sensitivites. They carry a full-range of enzymes, including Fructosin (a nutritional supplement that can assist the body with the contained xylose isomerase enzyme (XI) to exploit the accumulated surplus of fructose from food).

From the Frusano website ...

"Welcome to Frusano!

Are you looking for food low on fructose? If you suffer from hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI) or from fructose malabsorption (also often called fructose intolerance) or if you cannot eat fructose for other reasons, this is the site you are looking for. Frusano develops and markets food products specially designed for those who cannot eat fructose.

The products offered here are also wholesome in general: They don’t contain refined sugar but instead fructose-free glucose syrup containing healthy carbo-hydrates parts of which are fairly slowly absorbed and so ensure a balanced blood sugar level: Healthy sweetness results in lasting well-being. The rice syrup which we use in a number of our products is a special glucose syrup made from rice by natural methods with the properties described above. Frusano does not use artificial sweeteners nor alditols (e.g. sorbitol) nor, this goes without saying, high-fructose corn syrups (hfcs).

Our products are extremely low of fructose, sucrose and sorbitol. In addition most foodstuffs are lactose-free. We give a detailed description of the content of fructose, sucrose, sorbitol and lactose in every products description.

About Frusano

After having been diagnosed as suffering from fructose intolerance I tried, as you probably did, too, to find fructose-free food, and I discovered much to my surprise that there is hardly any on offer. Manufacturers as well as retailers remain silent or use the term “fructose-free” much too carelessly. I came across products like e.g. honey which obviously contain fructose but were nevertheless offered as “fructose-free”.

As there are no dealers specializing in fructose-free foodstuffs I have taken the initiative in setting up “Frusano”.

The first step was an analysis of many products which according to the specifications of the producers or their list of ingredients should have been low on fructose: Virtually none of them could be called low or even approximately low on fructose. Especially with “glucose syrup” in specifications caution is called for: This expression may well conceal the fact that a great deal of glucose has been converted into fructose in order to achieve greater sweetness. A great many of the producers are not even aware of this fact. So we have devoted a lot of money and energy in order NOT to offer such products.

The logical second step was, of course, to develop our own products. A considerable amount of research work had to be devoted to choosing the right kind of sweetener because pure glucose - as you probably know from experience - has some unpleasant properties such as a “metallic” taste, a high glycemic index and a tendency to crystallize. The result of our efforts is to be seen here in the shop: All of our products are sweetened with fructose-free glucose syrup which apart from tasting better is also much more wholesome than pure glucose.

Sufficiently precise analyses were also of major importance: Even renowned laboratories threw in the towel since especially the high glucose content of Frusano products makes it very difficult to determine the sucrose content. After many attempts we have now found a specialized laboratory which is able to determine precisely the fructose content as well as the sucrose content. This is of great importance: You can absolutely trust our information concerning the content of fructose, sorbitol and sucrose.

Frusano products are made by suppliers in Austria, Germany and the Philippines (Fair Trade)."

My Experience

I received a huge box of Frusano foods, enzymes and vitamins. I felt like a little girl on Christmas morning. I havn't been so happy since I realized that I had Fructose Malabsorption and MY SYMPTOMS ARE CONTROLLABLE. As I stated earlier Frusano has so many products. Here are the products that that I recieved the first time ordering from Frusano. Remember this is just a handful of Frusano products.

Rhubarb spread
Red currant spread
Filita Organic Dark Glucose-chocolate
Organic peppermints
Bukross Chokeberry
Spelt sesame bars
Rice dwarfs (cookies)
Traditional spicy christmas cookie
Corn flakes unsweetened
Dextrose Lolly
Organic Cocoa dessert
Instant vanilla sauce mix
FiliMultin Kapseln
Digestive enzyme tablets
Biolabor lactase, 10.000 FCC
Prokid, Children's Multi-vitamin
Ketchup without sugar

I am so happy with each and every product that I tried. They are delicious. It was easy to get carried away and overeat. The same rules of eating still apply. You do not want to eat too large of a portion. The great thing about Frusano products if that there is such detailed information on the packaging. You will have to visit there website though because the products themselves are in German, unless of course you speak the language. My husband had a lovely time as well testing these products. He does not have FM and can eat almost anything that he wants ... and he does sometimes (LOL). We are pretty accustomed to eating healthy because it makes us feel so good. Frusano products taste healthy and deliscious. My husband and I both love them. As long as I did not overdue it, and I did a few times, I was completely symptom free. Being able to enjoy lollipops, cookies, ketchup, cornflakes and jelly was a gift unlike any other. Thank you Frusano - You are an Angel & a Godsend to many of us FMers!

I am taking the multi vitamin everyday. I can honestly tell you that I feel better than ever. They have a children's vitamin too.

Please visit Frusano for more information. The Frusano website has lots of useful information about each product and also education on sugar, food intolerances and Fructose Malabsorption. You are sure to learn a lot just by visiting. Even the product descriptions are educational, especially the vitamins and supplements.

Love and Light everyone! Please let me know your thoughts about this company. Have you tried these products, what do you think?

My Experience

I was so excited to try this probiotic. I have been looking for the perfect probiotic and this is indeed, NO EASY TASK. Raw probioics for women is also a multi-vitamin, so I was even more hopeful that it would be a hit, rather than a miss. I started having suspicions that it would cause some trouble when I read the label. It contains an Eastern European RAW Fruit & Veggie Blend that includes Cherry, Carrot Root and green pea. I have a difficult time with all of these. Having Fructose Malabsorption makes it difficult to consume many fruits and veggies. I also noticed the dairy in this product. Although it does contain dairy digesting enzymes, I try to stay away from dairy as much as possible.

I took this probiotic for one month, three times a day as suggested. I noticed right away that it did not help with gas/flatulence troubles. Even after one month, it did not help in this area. What it did do, and do very well, was act almost as a laxative. It caused very loose bowels. It continued to do this the entire time that I took it.

Although I have great respect for Garden of Life and the Raw Probiotic Line, for myself I found that it does not quite work for me. Fructose Malabsorption makes it difficult to find supplements that are agreeable and just because this Raw Probiotic did not work for me, does not necessarily mean that it is not right for you.

If you are inclined to try Raw Probiotics please do. Be sure to post your experiences below. Also, if you have tried Raw Probiotics please let me know what you think in the comments section below.

Product Review: Dr Doherty's Gluten-Free Enzymes & Liquid Vitamin D-3

Hello everyone,

I have been having a great time testing out foods, vitamins, probiotics and recipes. Stay tuned, I have so much to share. If you have any ideas for a review, or a great recipe that you want to share, please send me an email or leave a comment. I love reader involvement. This week I am reviewing a few more products by Dr. Doherty.

BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER ...
If you have not read my first Dr. Doherty review or if you do not remember it, please do so by clicking on this link ... Product Review: Dr. Doherty's Gluten-Free Vitamins

Okay, now that everyone is caught up, today I will be reviewing Dr. Doherty's Enzymes and Dr. Doherty's Liquid Vitamin D3. Let's get started.

Digestive Vitality Enzyme

From Dr. Doherty's Gluten-Free Vitamins website
"Enzymes are proteins made by our bodies that break down specific types of foods. Some enzymes, like lipase, break down fats, proteases break down proteins and amylases break down carbohydrates. Enzymes are a critical part of digestion and nutritional absorption. C-liac Vitality Enzyme is a broad spectrum digestive enzyme that helps gently improve and enhance digestion. This is the same vegetarian enzyme formula that is in the C-liac Vitality Packs. The lipase in the formula is especially helpful for celiacs who are in the early stages of healing their villi and may need more support than can be found in the packs. The lipase also helps absorb the fat soluble vitamins, A,D,E and K as well as essential fatty acids. This enzyme issue is often why celiacs don’t tolerate multivitamins very well. Ideally, enzymes are taken with each meal to help break down and assimilate your food, leading to fewer digestive symptoms such as gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhea. Take one to two tablets with each meal. And of course they are gluten free and manufactured under the strictest quality control in the United States."

My experience

My husband and myself both gave these enzymes a fair week in court. The verdict ... We both noticed an improvement in digestion taking these enzymes. My husband is a better judge of enzymes then I am. He eats a much larger spectrum of foods and always takes enzymes. I on the other hand do not take an enzyme regularly and eat a very limited diet. Sometimes he actually searches my stash of health shakes, powders, multi's and supplements for some kind of enzyme to take. It is safe to say that he really likes enzymes, and finds them useful. He finds that a high quality enzyme is especially useful when he eats junk food; such as chips, ice cream or candy. Rather than feeling heavy after eating, regardless of it is a healthy meal, my husband says that he feels light and energetic when taking high quality enzymes with food. He also notices an improvement in regularity and quality of stools when taking a good enzyme. He has given Dr. Doherty's enzymes his personal seal of approval, and so have I. I noticed a big improvement in the quality of my stools. They were lighter and more solid. I noticed that if I had a stomachache I could take two or three of these enzymes and my stomach stopped hurting. I did not experience any fructose malasorption symptoms the way that so many other supplements and vitamins trigger in me. I really like Dr Doherty's vitamins and supplements. Dr Doherty's enzymes are very pure. She uses only the finest ingredients possible and they are all gluten free. Although fructose malabsorption is not the same as gluten intolerance or Celiac disease, wheat is a fructan and is troublesome for fructmals. I really liked taking these enzymes. I would continue to take them.

Dr. Doherty has chose to sell her products direct, to keep costs down. The entire line of Dr. Doherty products are reasonable in price with the Digestive Vitality Enzymes costing $19.00 for 120 tablets. The directions say to take 1-2 tablets, 3 times daily with meals or as directed by your health care professional. This is a great price for a high quality enzyme. Not to mention that all of the Dr. Doherty's products contain NO yeast, wheat, gluten, egg, milk/dairy, corn, sugar, starch, artificial coloring, preservatives or flavoring. The fish oil capsule contains trace amounts of soy. All of the other products and components are soy free. Sounds like the perfect enzyme to me.

C-Liac Vitality Liquid Vitamin D3

From the Dr. Doherty Website
"Vitamin D is best known for its role in promoting healthy bones. It plays a critical role in the absorption of calcium and research in the last few years has shown that it has many vital roles in maintaining and restoring health. Vitamin D is the “sunshine vitamin”, and can be made by our skin. The darker someone’s skin the more they are at risk of developing vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is important for healthy bones, effective immune function, cancer prevention, asthma prevention, mood maintenance and infection prevention. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin so people with malabsorption are at high risk of being deficient. C-liac vitality vitamin D is in a base of medium chain triglycerides, and easily digestible form of fat that is helpful for those with malabsorption and enzymatic insufficiencies (like newly diagnosed celiacs, those with pancreatic insufficiency or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).
Each bottle contains a sixty day supply of 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) the active form of this vitamin.
It is important to have blood tests to monitor your vitamin D levels. This is because, being a fat soluble vitamin, it can build up in your system and cause toxicity. Please have your practitioner check your levels at eight-week intervals while taking high dose vitamin D. The ideal blood level ranges for D3 appears to be between sixty and eighty ng/ml and over one hundred ng/ml is considered toxic."

My Experience

During the winter I am in the house for weeks, sometimes even months at a time. Hermet? Not quite, but I definitely enjoy my cozy home. I like my comfy nest so much that I rarely leave it. I try to take a walk out in the yard and soak up some sunlight at least once a day. I have been doing a lot of research lately on the effects of the sun. This research synchronized with my review on Dr Doherty's gluten free vitamin D perfectly. Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin, and can be made by our skin. I learned more from doing this review than any other review to date.

Here are some important facts I learned about sunlight and Vitamin D.

*Known as the sunshine vitamin, your body makes it when sunlight touches your skin.
*The type of sunlight that stimulates the body to produce vitamin D does not penetrate glass. So you don't generate vitamin D when sitting in your car or home.
*Seasonal Affective Disorder is caused by a melatonin imbalance initiated by lack of exposure to sunlight.
*Vitamin D deficiency is a world-wide epidemic.
*Vitamin D is necessary for more than bone health in humans. It plays a huge role in immunity, preventing osteoporosis, depression, prostate cancer, asthma, infections, breast cancer, and even the effects of diabetes.
*Vitamin D is heart healthy.
*Vitamin D deficiency causes schizophrenia.
*Vitamin D deficiency causes Rickets.
*Chronic vitamin D deficiency is often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia because its symptoms are so similar: muscle weakness, aches and pains.
*Vitamin D prevents excessive cell production associated with psoriasis.
*It is possible for vitamin D to be taken in toxic doses. Blood tests are available to check levels.
*Sufficient levels of vitamin D are crucial for calcium absorption in your intestines. Without sufficient vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium. Vitamin D long has been known to positively affect bone health by helping maintain calcium balance in the bloodstream.
*Vitamin D3 is the type of vitamin D the body naturally produces in the skin in response to sun exposure.
*Vitamin D3 is both a vitamin and a hormone.
*Vitamin D3 supplementation is an effective alternative to UV exposure, provided adequate doses are taken.
*Vitamin D3 supplements come in two forms: oil (cod liver oil-based) - fat-soluble vitamin D, includes liquid drops or gel caps & dry powder (lanolin-based) - water-soluble vitamin D, includes capsules or tablets. Both water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamin D are equally absorbed and metabolized by the body.
*Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin so people with malabsorption are at high risk of being deficient.
*Those with dark skin need more light exposure to get their vitamin D.
*If you have limited sun exposure, live in a northern climate, have dark skin or eat few vitamin D-containing foods, you probably need to take a supplement. Ask your doctor how much.

As I was researching all of this I began to see the importance of getting adequate amounts of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin so people with malabsorption are at high risk of being deficient. Excited that the universe brought me a Vitamin D supplement to try from a well-respected and trusted source, Dr. Doherty's Gluten Free Vitamins, I knew that fate must be telling me something. Life loves me and is so good to me. I am usually so afraid to try vitamins and supplements because my body is so sensitive and intolerant of so much. My body gets out of balance easily and stays this way for days if I consume something I am intolerant of. I feel pretty confident when it comes to taking vitamins from Dr Doherty. Dr Doherty's Gluten free vitamins are very pure. She designs them down to the molecule, using only the highest quality ingredients for her products.

*C-liac vitality vitamin D is a gluten free supplement, that is free of yeast, wheat, gluten, egg, milk/dairy, corn, sugar, starch, artificial coloring, preservatives or flavoring.

*C-liac vitality vitamin D is in a base of medium chain triglycerides, and easily digestible form of fat that is helpful for those with malabsorption and enzymatic insufficiencies (like newly diagnosed celiacs, those with pancreatic insufficiency or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).

*Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin so people with malabsorption are at high risk of being deficient making this vitamin extremely important.

I began taking Dr Doherty's Vitamin D3 a month ago, 1/2 dropper, once a day. It is possible to take too much so I was careful only to take the amount directed on the bottle. This is a liquid vitamin D. It is in a base of an easily digestible form of fat that is helpful for those with malabsorption. I use the medicine dropper and squirt a half a dropper into my mouth. It tastes like cooking oil of some kind. I then take a drink of water to wash down the flavor. There is no aftertaste at all. It is quick and easy and best of all it caused absolutely no negative side effects whatsoever. I am completely hooked.

One bottle of C-Liac Vitality Liquid Vitamin D3 costs $21.00. Each bottle contains a sixty day supply of 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) the active form of this vitamin. Dr Doherty sells her supplements direct to keep the costs down. To learn more or to place an order please visit Dr Doherty.

Hello everyone and (I bow my head) Namaste!

From the Namaste Website

What does Namaste mean?

Many people ask us what the term "Namaste" means. We will do our best to explain it here.
The word "Namaste" (pronounced "Naa-Maa-Stay") is an ancient Sanskrit word with no literal translation. After many hours reviewing all the different translations, we decided we like this one the best.

"The Spirit within me honors and respects the Spirit within you."
The word ‘Spirit’ in this context has no particular religious connotation. You could substitute the word ‘Heart’ or ‘Soul’ if you like. The essence of the phrase is simply that the best part of me wishes you well – in every way. In seeking to offer you delicious gluten and allergen-free foods, we nourish the body. In nourishing the body, we hope to help nourish the mind and the spirit so you can enjoy optimum health.

Pasta Pisavera Pasta Meal

An Italian Delight! Just boil this veggie brown rice pasta, drain, and add our delicious Italian Seasoning packet for a quick and easy side dish. Or, embellish with chopped chicken, artichoke hearts, peppers, you name it, for a satisfying entree!

Ingredients

Vegetable pasta (brown rice, spinach powder, tomato powder, carrot powder, water)
shelled hemp seed
tomato powder
salt
granulated garlic
Italian seasoning
granulated onion
silicon dioxide (added to prevent caking)

This product contains no wheat, gluten, soy, corn, potato, dairy, casein, peanuts or tree nuts.
Directions: Add oil.

My Experience with Namaste Pasta Pisavera Pasta Meal

My husband and I really enjoyed this dish. It was easy to prepare, taking less than ten minutes and was the perfect amount for both of us. All you have to do is boil the noodles and prepare the italian flavoring. The italian flavoring is a herb and spice mix that you stir into warm oil. Now I am one to really be careful when it comes to ingredients. I am very sensitive and many of you are also. I chose not to try the seasoning mainly because it contained garlic and I did not want to take any chances. I did prepare the seasoning for my husband though and he absolutely loved it - LOVED IT. In fact we picked up another bag at the store the other day. Although the noodles are made with brown rice and vegetables they did not give me any trouble at all. I actually felt really good after eating them. I added some fresh spinach, black olives, fresh lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt and cayenne pepper to the noodles. This was delicious. I highly recommend getting a bag of Pasta Pisavera the next time you are at the store.

My Experience With Namaste Pizza Crust Mix

I love pizza. I grew up with it, didn't everyone? We used to order pizza every weekend when I was young. I was excited with the opportunity to review Namaste Pizza Crust Mix. Then I realized that it had garlic and onion listed under the ingredients on the side of the Namaste Pizza Crust Mix bag. I thought about going for it anyway, but the thought of FM symptoms prompted me to be as disciplined as usual. Instead I cooked up a feast of a pizza for my family. More for them, I thought.

The pizza crust makes two 14" crusts. It was really easy to make, as all Namaste products are. Everything was mixed in one bag. All you have to do is add water and oil. Then you use an electric mixer for a few minutes until the batter is blended well and spread the batter on a pizza pan and bake.

After about twenty minutes I pulled the pizza crust out of the oven and added tomato sauce, olives, green peppers, spinach, cheddar cheese and mushrooms. I put it back in the oven for another fifteen minutes or so. I added slices of fresh avocado right before I served it.

The verdict: Delicious! A new favorite in the household. My husband said that the crust tasted like it came from a pizza parlor and was flavorful on its own.

Don't forget to enter to win the Namaste gift package, including three Namaste products.
